National Rescue Standard (NaRS) Qualifications
The NaRS pool rescue programmes will enable candidates to learn how to rescue individuals, perform resuscitation and provide first aid skills at the level required for each course.

NaRS Qualifications

The NaRS pool rescue programmes will enable candidates to learn how to rescue individuals, perform resuscitation and provide first aid skills at the level required for each course.
Please see below for course requirements:

Pool Lifeguard
All candidates should be: - 16 years or older - Able to swim 50 meters in 60 seconds or less- Able to swim 100 meters on their front- Able to swim 100 meters on their back- Retrieve an object from the deepest part of the swimming pool. The course is a minimum of 36 hours plus examination and will include theory work, extensive practical rescue work, resuscitation and training specific to the venue being used.

Pool Attendant
All candidates should be 16 years of age or over. The course is a minimum of 14 hours plus examination and will include training on rescue, resuscitation and pool specific training including theory work.

Poolside Helper
All candidates should be 14 years of age or over. The course is a minimum of 13 hours plus examination and will include training on rescue, resuscitation and pool specific training including theory work.

Pool Safety Award
This award is specifically designed for both school & swimming teachers to provide the skills to be able to handle any emergencies that occur on poolside or in the pool. Candidate must be 14 years of age or over and be involved in teaching swimming. The course lasts for 6 hours.

NaRS First Aid

The NaRS First aid qualifications provide the skills to perform first aid not only in the leisure industry but also in the general workplace.
Please see below for course requirements:

HSE Approved First Aid at Work
This course provides skills and qualifications that meet the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. Candidates should be 13 years of age or over, the course will be a minimum of 24 hours and will include theory and practical work.

First Aid Appointed Person
The appointed person course will provide the skills to oversee all first aid requirements in terms of looking after all equipment and first aid facilities and requirements for call emergency medical services. Candidates should be 13 years of age or over, the course is a minimum of 4 hours.

STA Swimming Teaching

The STA Swimming Teaching course provide the required skill set to teach swimming at the level of course chosen. All courses require a life saving qualification minimun of the NaRS Pool Safety award which can be incorporated into the course, for more details see NaRS courses.
Course requirements are listed below:

Teaching Swimming – Beginners
Candidates must be 16 years of age or older, the course will last for 20 hours plus examination and will include both theory and practical teaching sessions. Successful candidates will be able to teach up to 10 beginners and can also assist with larger or more advance class with the supervision of a fully qualified teacher.

Teaching Swimming – Full
Candidates must be 18 years of age or older, the course will last for 26 hours and will include both theory and practical teaching sessions. The qualification will allow holder to teach all levels without the requirement of supervision.

Level 2 Certificate in Aquatic Teaching – Baby & Pre-school
Candidates must be 18 years of age or over, the course will last for 22 hours. The course will include both theory and practical teaching sessions.

Water Treatment

The STA also provide course in managing swimming pool and spa water,
please see below for details:

Level 1 Foundation Certificate in
Swimming Pool & Spa Water Treatment

Candidates must be 16 years of age or over for this 6 hour course which covers topics such as maintaining water conditions, importance of hygiene and cleanliness and
operating parameters. The course contains both theory & practical work.

Level 2 Foundation Certificate in
Swimming Pool & Spa Water Treatment

Successful candidates of the level 1 course who are aged 18 years or over can complete the Level 2 course which includes circulation, filtration & backwashing, pH and balanced water, chemical addition and control, disinfection methods, forms of pollution etc The course last for 20 hours.

The health & safety courses are provided by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health. Course details are listed below:
